Donna Karan is a label of the fashion designer Donna Karan with the same name. Donna Karan founded DKNY in the year 1989 in New York as a younger, more affordable diffusion line to run alongside her existing Donna Karan New York label after getting inspiration from her daughter Gaby. The designer came to limelight after her 'Essentials' line, while in the beginning only offering seven easy pieces that could well be mixed and matched to give way to fully integrated wardrobe for every women. In the early 1990s, the prolific designer was once described by the New York Times as the “Ed Koch in a stretchy black dress”. In the year 1977, the designer won the Coty American Fashion Critics' Award and again in the year 1982 that she shared with Louis Dell'Ollio for Anne Klein. She was also inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in the year 1984. Donna Karan also won special CFDA awards in 1985, 1986 and 1987.
